{"id":1696,"date":"2023-03-22T14:02:37","date_gmt":"2023-03-22T13:02:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.fh-kaernten.at\/med-tech\/?p=1696"},"modified":"2023-03-24T12:51:01","modified_gmt":"2023-03-24T11:51:01","slug":"phd-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.fh-kaernten.at\/med-tech\/2023\/03\/22\/phd-call\/","title":{"rendered":"Our PhD call is now officially open!"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"1696\" class=\"elementor elementor-1696\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-3be1347 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"3be1347\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-ba56c40\" data-id=\"ba56c40\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1c1611d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1c1611d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As part of the collaboration between the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences (CUAS) and the Medical University of Vienna,\u00a0<span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">seven PhD positions will be established with research starting in the 2023\/24 winter semester.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">As we have announced\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.fh-kaernten.at\/med-tech\/2022\/12\/05\/doc-funds-connect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">G\u00fcnther Grabner from CUAS\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">and Wolfgang Bogner from MUV received an FWF doc.funds project, entitled: <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">\u201c<em>Interdisciplinary platform for new research methods in the field of demyelinating diseases and brain tumours\u00a0<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\"><em>\u2013 where ultrahigh field MRI, histology, and artificial intelligence meet<\/em>\u201d.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">The goal of this project is to bridge the gap between brain research and clinical needs with cutting-edge magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and machine learning.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">It will combine scientific expertise and equipment at the cutting edge of technology from three departments of the Medical University of Vienna\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">\u2013 the University Hospitals for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, for Neurology as well as for Neurosurgery \u2013 and CUAS in the study area Engineering &amp; IT, Medical Engineering and Analytics.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">Four of the PhD candidates will be situated in Klagenfurt, at the CUAS, and three in Vienna, at the MUV. The positions are open for 3.5 years.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">All 7 PhD candidates will be enrolled in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meduniwien.ac.at\/hp\/phd-mic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">N094 Medical Imaging PhD program<\/a><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">\u00a0of the MUV, with some lectures held at the CUAS. <\/span><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">To meet the highest international standards, the PhD candidates will be encouraged to go for a research stay at one of our seven internationally renowned partners (including e.g. Harvard, MIT and industry partner ICOMETRIX).<\/span><\/p><p>Project #1<br \/><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\"><strong>Reducing static magnetic field inhomogeneities in the human brain<\/strong><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">Location: Klagenfurt<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">The goal is to develop a technology to mitigate undesirable local\/temporal errors in the magnetic field(B0) of MR scanners, which would cause degraded MRI data quality. These limitations will be overcome by combining custom-made MR hardware with deep-learning-based software, which\u2014when integrated on the MR scanner\u2014will enable real-time mitigation of B0-field errors. This thesis will involve MR scanner programming, developing deep neuronal networks and experimental validation in phantoms\/healthy humans. For more info and to apply, click\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/karriere.fh-kaernten.at\/Inserate\/Inserat?guid=46bed5c7-a718-499e-99f2-665083a75efd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">.<\/span><\/p><p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.fh-kaernten.at\/med-tech\/files\/2023\/03\/projekt1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"446\" \/><\/p><p>Project #2<br \/><strong><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">Developing metabolic MR imaging techniques for neurological disorders<br \/><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">Location: Vienna<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">This FWF-funded project has the goal to optimize new metabolic imaging techniques termed Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer (CEST) for clinical application in patients with demyelinating disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis and brain tumours. The diagnostic and prognostic information obtained by this technique will then be compared to our established MRI techniques to perform a preliminary evaluation of the clinical value and complementarity of CEST and similar magnetization transfer techniques. This thesis will involve MR method optimization, data acquisition\/evaluation, and analysis of multi-parametric MRI data obtained at our 7T MR scanner in phantoms, healthy volunteers and patients. Both biological tissue parameters are needed to study the development and diseases of the human brain but are currently only accessible via ex vivo histology. <span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">This PhD project will focus on the development of deep learning-based techniques to predict ex-vivo histological features based on in-vivo MRI e.g. to visualize myelin and iron distributions. This PhD project will focus on the classification and further analyses (rim expansion, T1 black holes, atrophy) of the lesions in 7T MRI images using deep learning-based techniques. This rim-like iron accumulation can be detected in vivo using 7T MRI. However, another demyelinating disease, X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD), also shows profound iron accumulation at inflammatory lesion rims. Here, we would like to evaluate the added value of 7T iron imaging compared to 3T MRI in the detection of smoldering inflammation in X-ALD, with the goal of sensitively detecting inflammation. Radiomics and genomics\/proteomics features derived from clinical sampling will improve the precision of preoperative brain tumor characterization. These prospective tasks include the recruitment of study patients, transfer of images to neuronavigation, support in intraoperative data and tissue collection, evaluation of histological analyses, follow-up examinations and comparisons of clinical MRSI to other imaging methods such as intraoperative 5-ALA fluorescence.
